Customize Odoo or build custom software?

Odoo handles standard processes very well. Once your custom modules start piling up, a focused custom build ($16,800 to $56,000 (€15,000–€50,000)excl. VAT for an ERP) or a hybrid setup can cost less over 3 to 5 years.

In short

Keep Odoo if your processes stay close to the standard and the built-in apps cover most of your needs. A focused custom build ($16,800 to $56,000 (€15,000–€50,000)excl. VAT for an ERP, $6,800 to $22,400 (€6,000–€20,000)excl. VAT for a business module connected to Odoo) makes sense when custom modules keep piling up and make every upgrade harder.

Odoo is good software. For a company whose processes look like those of thousands of others, it is often the most sensible choice. The question changes when every new need turns into one more custom module, and the customization bill ends up higher than the license bill. Here is how I help you decide, with numbers.

What Odoo does very well

Odoo covers accounting, invoicing, purchasing, inventory, sales, CRM and many other apps in a single tool. It comes in two editions: Community, which is open source, and Enterprise, which is subscription-based. The benefits are real: standard features tested by a large user base, a consistent interface, and a wide network of integrators.

For a distribution, trading or services business with conventional operations, a well-configured Odoo saves years of development. I will never advise you to rewrite accounting or purchasing that already works.

What Odoo really costs

The cost of Odoo breaks down into three items:

  • the license for the Enterprise edition, billed per user per month depending on the plan. Prices are published on Odoo’s official pricing page, but I could not reliably check them in October 2026 (the page adapts to your country and could not be read automatically). Check them for your country, and look at which plan includes hosting, API access and the Studio customization tool;
  • implementation: configuration, data migration, training. Odoo publishes its own Success Packs, paid once: the “Custom” pack with 100 consultant hours was listed at US$12,500 (US$10,625 with the 15% discount for new customers), as checked in October 2026. The same page states that monthly fees apply for maintaining additional modules or lines of code;
  • custom modules built by an integrator, and above all their maintenance at every major version upgrade.

That last item is what tips the decision. A custom module is not a one-time cost: it has to be adapted, tested and sometimes rewritten for each new Odoo version.

Warning signs

Sign What it tells you
More than half of your everyday screens are custom developments You are paying for an ERP and using it as a development framework
Version upgrades keep getting pushed back year after year Technical debt is building up in the modules
Your teams keep spreadsheets next to Odoo The real process is not covered
The yearly cost of modules exceeds the cost of licenses Customization costs more than the software
A simple request takes several days of integrator time The platform is holding you back instead of helping

If two or more of these apply to you, it is time to compare with another approach.

Three options and their budgets

There are more than two choices. The middle option is often the most cost-effective.

Option When to choose it Indicative budget Timeline
Keep standard Odoo, cut back custom code Processes close to the standard Configuration by your integrator A few weeks
Keep Odoo and add a dedicated app connected via API One business process does not fit Odoo (client portal, field app, scheduling) $6,800 to $22,400 (€6,000–€20,000)excl. VAT 1 to 3 months
Custom ERP limited to the modules you need Highly specific processes, many modules to maintain $16,800 to $56,000 (€15,000–€50,000)excl. VAT 3 to 6 months
Multi-portal platform (customers, partners, sites) Several audiences and entities to serve Custom quote 3 to 6 months or more

The hybrid option is covered in detail in connecting an app to Odoo. The ERP limited to useful modules is explained in ERP too heavy: building only the modules you need. For a first range based on your features, use the estimator.

Compare over 3 to 5 years

Compare over the lifespan of the tool, not the first year. For each option, add up per-user licenses, implementation, custom module maintenance, upgrade costs, hosting, and the time your teams spend re-entering data.

An illustrative example, with made-up amounts to replace with your own: if your licenses and module maintenance together come to €25,000 a year, that is €75,000 over 3 years. A custom tool at $44,800 (€40,000)excl. VAT, plus €5,000 a year for hosting and maintenance, comes to €55,000 over the same period. With licenses at €8,000 a year and little custom code, the math clearly swings back in Odoo’s favor.

The full method is in the 3-year total cost of SaaS versus custom software.

When to keep Odoo

I recommend staying on Odoo, possibly slimmed down, if:

  • your processes are typical of your industry, with nothing unusual;
  • accounting, purchasing and inventory are the core of the need;
  • you have a responsive integrator and your upgrades are current;
  • your team is small and license costs stay moderate.

In those cases, custom software would cost more for a similar result. The right move is to remove unnecessary custom code, not add more.

Where to start

  1. Take stock of your custom modules, their yearly cost and the processes they cover.
  2. Identify the process that is stuck: the one that generates spreadsheets, re-entry or endless change requests.
  3. Get an outside view. An audit ($660 (€589)excl. VAT for the express version, $2,300 (€1,990)excl. VAT for the full version) assesses the state of your developments and prices the options.
  4. Decide scope by scope: keep, slim down, extend or replace, module by module.

If the chosen option is a dedicated module or a focused ERP, the project follows my usual approach to business app development: scoping, mockups, development in batches, data migration and three months of support included.

Frequently asked questions

Can we keep accounting in Odoo and build the rest alongside it?

Yes, and it is often the best compromise. Odoo remains the reference for accounting, purchasing or inventory, and a dedicated app handles the process that does not fit its boxes. The two exchange data through Odoo’s API, with a single source of truth for each type of information.

Is Odoo Community enough to avoid license fees?

The Community edition is open source, but it does not include every app found in the Enterprise edition. What you save on licenses often shifts to module development and maintenance. Run the numbers on your actual scope before deciding.

How much does Odoo customization cost?

It depends on the number and complexity of custom modules. Odoo publishes its own onboarding packages (Success Packs) priced in consultant hours, and partner integrators bill according to their own rates. Always ask for the yearly maintenance cost of the modules, not just the initial development cost.

Is custom development riskier than Odoo?

The risk is different. Odoo gives you a proven foundation; custom software gives you a tool that fits exactly, but it depends on the quality of your provider. To reduce that risk, require transfer of the source code, documentation, and delivery in batches tested by your team.
