A Lovable app can be taken over cleanly: the code syncs with GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket, and the database exports with its users. A takeover starts with an audit (from $660 (€589)excl. VAT) that tells you whether to consolidate or rebuild; a rebuild is priced like a business app, from $6,800 to $22,400 (€6,000–€20,000)excl. VAT.
Lovable gets you an app that works on screen, with a real database, in a matter of days. Many business owners use it to test an idea or equip a team, and that is a good use. Then the question comes: can this app handle real customers, sensitive data, payments? I know the situation first-hand: my own website was an app generated with Lovable before I rebuilt it. Here is what the tool actually lets you recover, what needs checking, and how to decide.
What Lovable lets you export
The good news: Lovable produces real code, and its documentation clearly describes what can leave the platform (documentation checked in October 2026).
| Item | Exportable? | How, according to the official documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Application code | Yes | Git sync with GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket, on all plans; archive download on paid plans |
| Server functions and database structure | Yes | Included in the repository (functions and migration files) |
| Database contents | Yes, separately | Database export as a PostgreSQL archive, or table by table as CSV (deploying outside Lovable) |
| User accounts | Yes | Included in the database export, with hashed passwords |
| Uploaded files (images, documents) | Yes, manually | Downloaded from the storage area |
| Secret keys | No | Must be set up again at the new host |
| Connectors and AI calls run through Lovable | No | Replaced with your own integrations |
| Scheduled jobs | No | Must be inventoried and recreated |
One key point: Git sync never exports the data. An up-to-date GitHub repository is not a backup on its own; you also need to export the database and files.
What I check first
AI-generated apps have recurring weaknesses, which I describe in the guide on building an app yourself with AI. On a Lovable project, I start with:
- Database access rules. Each user should only read and change their own data, and the database must enforce it, not the screen.
- Exposed keys. No secret key should appear in the code sent to the browser.
- Account ownership. The repository, the database and the domain name must belong to the company.
- Search visibility, if the app also serves as a public website. That is the flaw that made me rebuild my own site: to Google, each page was an almost empty loading screen.
- Code consistency. After hundreds of AI prompts, you often find duplicate functions and abandoned pieces.
Consolidate or rebuild
The audit leads to one of three options, described in the guide on taking over a no-code or AI-built app.
- Consolidate when the structure is sound: fix access rules, add tests and backups, set up hosting you control, then develop the app normally.
- Migrate piece by piece when one part holds and another blocks: rebuild the fragile modules one at a time, without stopping operations.
- Rebuild when the foundation is too fragile: the prototype becomes the requirements, and the data is migrated.
Because Lovable often relies on React and Supabase, the stack I use, consolidation is possible more often than with a closed no-code tool.
What a takeover costs
| Step | Price | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Express audit | $660 (€589)excl. VAT | A few days |
| Full audit | $2,300 (€1,990)excl. VAT | 5 to 7 days |
| Consolidation or piece-by-piece migration | Quoted after the audit | Depends on the action plan |
| Rebuild as a business app | $6,800 to $22,400 (€6,000–€20,000)excl. VAT, with a 0.85 factor in the estimator when a prototype exists | 1 to 3 months |
| You carry on yourself, with support | Coaching at $170 (€150)excl. VAT per hour | At your own pace |
An illustrative example using the estimator’s pricing: a business app (base $6,800 (€6,000)excl. VAT) with accounts and roles (€1,500), an admin back office (€2,000) and data migration (€800) comes to $11,600 (€10,300)excl. VAT; with an existing prototype, the calculation base drops to about $9,800 (€8,750)excl. VAT. Try your own case with the estimator.
Hosting and third-party tools remain your cost, as do Lovable credits if you keep using it.
When not to take it over
I will be straightforward: if your Lovable app serves three people, holds no sensitive data and does not break with every change, keep it as it is. Just export the database regularly and make sure the repository sits in a company account. A takeover makes sense when the tool opens up to customers, handles personal data or money, or becomes something your business depends on.
Where to start
- Secure what exists: connect the project to a company Git repository and run a first export of the database and files.
- List what works and what worries you, screen by screen.
- Ask for an audit: that is what my AI project takeover offer is for. You come away with a costed action plan.
- Then decide between consolidating, rebuilding, or carrying on yourself with hourly support.
Frequently asked questions
Do I own the code Lovable generated?
Lovable’s documentation states that the synced Git repository is a copy you own, in your own account. Do check that the repository sits in a company account, not in the personal account of whoever built the prototype.
Can I keep using Lovable after the takeover?
You can: sync works in both directions. But two sources of changes on the same code, the AI on one side and a developer on the other, need clear rules: a dedicated branch and a review before merging. Often, Lovable is retired once the production version is stable.
Will users have to create new accounts?
No, if the database is exported correctly. According to Lovable’s documentation, the database export includes users and their hashed passwords. Sessions do not carry over, so everyone signs in again, and Google or GitHub sign-in must be reconfigured.
How long does a takeover take?
The audit takes a few days (express) to a week (full). What follows depends on the option: consolidation can take a few weeks, while a rebuild follows a business app timeline of 1 to 3 months.
Was my prototype useful if we rebuild?
Yes. The screens, flows and rules you validated become the requirements. That is why the estimator applies a 0.85 factor when a prototype already exists.
