Moving from a no-code tool (Glide, Softr) to a real application

Glide and Softr are great for getting started, but their code cannot be exported. What you can take with you (mostly your data), the signs it is time to move, and the budget for a business app: $6,800 to $22,400 (€6,000–€20,000)excl. VAT.

In short

Glide and Softr do not export an app’s code: moving to a real application means rebuilding it while reusing the data, which often already sits in a spreadsheet, Airtable or a SQL database. For a business app, plan $6,800 to $22,400 (€6,000–€20,000)excl. VAT and 1 to 3 months.

Glide and Softr can turn a spreadsheet or an Airtable base into an app in a few hours. To equip a team quickly or test a client portal, that is an excellent starting point. But these tools were designed to get you going fast, not to carry complex processes, large volumes or strict security requirements. Here is what you can take with you when you leave, the signs it is time to move, and how the transition works.

What Glide and Softr let you recover

The points below come from each vendor’s official sources, checked in October 2026.

Item Glide Softr
Application code No: the Glide team states on its official forum that there is no source code to export No code export feature found in the official documentation
Where the data lives Glide Tables, Google Sheets or SQL databases depending on setup In the connected source (Airtable, Google Sheets, SQL, Supabase…), or in Softr Databases
Data export Glide Tables export as CSV; empty columns and computed columns linked to other tables are not exported CSV or Excel export button on table blocks; the source itself stays directly accessible
Logic, screens, permissions Rebuilt Rebuilt

A useful point for Softr: its documentation on choosing a data source states that Softr does not store or sync data from your source (apart from a 24-hour cache), Softr Databases being the exception. If your app runs on Airtable or a SQL database, your data is already in your hands.

For Glide, the thing to watch is computed columns: they often hold business rules (totals, statuses, relationships) that do not come out with the export and must be documented.

Signs it is time to move

  • You are hitting the platform’s limits: row counts, number of users, a higher plan required for a single feature.
  • The bill climbs with every user you add, while usage stays the same.
  • Access rules are getting complex: a client should only see their own orders, a site manager only their site, and the configuration becomes fragile.
  • Business rules are overflowing: pricing calculations, multi-step approvals, document generation.
  • You need integrations with your ERP, accounting or website, beyond simple automations.
  • The source spreadsheet has become the weak link: someone edits it by hand and the app shows nonsense.

The page on when Airtable reaches its limits covers that last case, common behind Softr.

How the transition works

  1. Inventory of screens, roles, rules (including computed columns and automations) and integrations.
  2. New data model in a real PostgreSQL database, fixing duplicates and repurposed fields along the way.
  3. Development in batches, tested by your team on real imported data.
  4. Trial data migration, then the final one just before the switch.
  5. Switch-over and user training, with the old tool read-only for a few days.

The old app remains valuable: it validated the need and serves as the requirements. The guide on taking over a no-code app describes the options in detail.

What it costs

Project Price Timeline
Audit of the existing tool and migration plan Express audit $660 (€589)excl. VAT, full audit $2,300 (€1,990)excl. VAT A few days to 7 days
Focused business app replacing the no-code tool $6,800 to $22,400 (€6,000–€20,000)excl. VAT 1 to 3 months
Client or partner portal (client area module: $2,800 (€2,500)excl. VAT) Within the same range depending on scope 1 to 3 months
Installable mobile app (notifications and offline module: $1,200 (€1,000)excl. VAT) Added to the project Within the schedule

The estimator applies a 0.85 factor when a no-code tool already exists. Run the numbers with the estimator. After go-live, the recurring cost becomes hosting (a few tens to a few hundred euros a year) and maintenance, with no per-user billing.

When to stay on Glide or Softr

I will be straightforward: if your app serves a small team, the rules are simple, the data is not sensitive and the subscription stays reasonable, keep it. These tools do very well what they were designed for. Custom software makes sense when the tool becomes central to the business, when the platform’s limits cost you time, or when the per-user bill exceeds what an app of your own would cost. The guide on custom vs no-code helps you decide.

Where to start

  1. Export your data and check what actually comes out, especially computed columns.
  2. List the hidden rules: formulas, automations, visibility filters.
  3. Ask for an audit through my AI and no-code project takeover offer to get a costed migration plan.
  4. Decide with a fixed quote after scoping, comparing it with what the platform costs you over three years.

Frequently asked questions

Is my data locked into Glide or Softr?

Generally not. With Softr, data usually stays in the connected source (Airtable, Google Sheets, a SQL database), unless you use Softr Databases. With Glide, internal tables can be exported as CSV, with some limits on computed columns. Run a test export before you decide.

Can we keep Airtable or Google Sheets behind the new app?

It works for a transition, but I advise against it long term for a business tool: volume limits, access rules that are hard to guarantee, slowness. The right target is a real database with permissions enforced on the server.

Will the new app work on mobile like Glide?

Yes. I build installable web apps (PWAs) that work on a phone like a native app, with notifications and offline mode if needed, without going through the app stores.

How long should we keep the old tool?

Until the switch, then a few days in read-only mode as a safety net. The subscription continues during the rebuild, so include it in your budget.
